Apple has announced today at the “Let’s Rock” event in San Francisco that over 100 million apps have been downloaded from the Apple App Store so far. That’s an amazing feat seeing as the App Store has only been active since July 11th of 2008. The App Store features about 3,000 applications with about 90 percent of them being sold for less than $10 and over 600 of them for nothing at all. Users can access the Apple App Store via a WiFi connection on their iPhone where they can download everything from games or apps that help you organize your busy schedule and even apps that make use of the iPhones built-in GPS system to help locate local attractions or restaurants.

This is an amazing milestone for Apple, with the success of the new iPhone 3G and App Store worldwide it looks like Apple is even more popular than ever. Below is the press release from Apple about their App Store achievement:

SAN FRANCISCO—September 9, 2008—Apple® today announced that iPhone™ and iPod® touch users have downloaded more than 100 million applications from its groundbreaking new App Store since its launch on July 11, 2008. More than 3,000 applications are currently available on the App Store, with over 90 percent priced at less than $10 and more than 600 offered for free. Applications can take advantage of iPhone’s large display, innovative Multi-Touch™ user interface, fast hardware-accelerated 3D graphics, built-in accelerometer and location-based technology to create mobile applications unlike any seen before.

“iPhone’s unique capabilities, easy SDK and the ability to reach an audience of millions via the App Store made this an easy development choice for us,” said John Pollard, Jott CEO. “To date, we’ve had hundreds of thousands of downloads of Jott for iPhone, which has been a major win for our company.”

iphone app store

Apps have been kicked off the Apple App Store for a while now and no one knew exactly why. One iPhone App developer got an email that showed the reason. According to Apple an app needs to serve a purpose or perform a significant function to be allowed on the App Store. There are quite a few apps on the App Store that seem to not serve any purpose at all yet they still remain, this seems a bit unfair for the developers who have had their apps removed.

“Hello Developer,

We’ve reviewed your application Pull My Finger. We have determined that this application is of limited utility to the broad iPhone and iPod touch user community, and will not be published to the App Store.

It may be very appropriate to share with friends and family, and we recommend you review the Ad Hoc method on the Distribution tab of the iPhone Developer Portal for details on distributing this application among a small group of people of your choosing.

Regards,

Victor Wang
